Biography

Dr. Wurster is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases at MD Anderson Cancer Center and serves as Junior Lead of MD Anderson’s experimental mycology program. His research focuses on the immunopathogenesis and immunotherapy of invasive mycoses, pathobiology of polymicrobial infections, innovative preclinical infection models, and host biomarkers for personalized management of opportunistic infections. Holding advanced degrees in both medicine and experimental medicine and having received postgraduate and postdoctoral training in experimental mycology, molecular oncology, and translational immunology, Dr. Wurster has a versatile and highly translational research background to study precision medicine in fungal immunology.

In addition to his involvement in MUCOR-ADVANCE, Dr. Wurster has an active K01 grant on omics-guided management of viral and fungal co-infections. He has published over 70 manuscripts and has been recognized with several young investigator awards and abstract/presentation awards. Dr. Wurster serves as Co-Investigator of MUCOR-ADVANCE Project 3 and the Clinical Core.
